Creating a FELTED BACKPACK
My new backpack felting tutorial video will be available in early 2025. You can follow the backpack making process step by step, from design to finishing touches. The tutorial video is in English, is divided into 13 episodes and guides you through the process with detailed instructions. If you would like to be notified in advance of the release, please sign up for my newsletter!
In this video, I show you step by step how to make a beautiful backpack for everyday wear, the cover of which can be like a small picture.
In addition to the basic techniques of felting, you will learn the following skills:
- You will gain an insight into the design aspects and at some points you can adjust the templates to your own size.
- How can creat beautiful color gradients.
- You will learn the ins and outs of pre-felting and using silk fiber.
- I will show you how to create a thin but strong bag body.
- How to create a strong, stretch-free strap.
- You will learn an exciting, strong way to create the top flap.
- You will receive instructions on how to use small parts.
I recommend the tutorial to both advanced and beginner felters. Although the size and complexity of the object require patience to make, the process is easy to master by following the very detailed instructions. In the delicate details, I draw attention to possible errors and suggest solutions to resolve them.
The tutorial includes a materials and tools list, a downloadable template, some cover samples, and a sketchy pdf with notes on the essential sequential steps.
I have divided the video into 13 work phases, in which I have marked the rest points, where you can interrupt the work for several days, so you can progress at your own pace. The backpack takes five days to make.
The 13 chapter lead you through step by step:
- Materials & Tools
- Design and Templates
- Making the Prefelt
- Cutting the Prefelt
- Making the Cover of the Backpack
- Making the Straps
- Making the Inner Pockets
- The Main Body of the Backpack
- Fitting the Cover
- Felting
- Fulling and Forming
- Final Touches
- Making the Bits and Pieces
I have guided several participants through this process in live workshops and many eye-catching backpacks have been created this way. Each piece carries/compliments the color scheme choice and pattern design of its maker.
